Move Over France: Oregon Wants to Ban Hijabi Teachers

Okay, so I know I started this for the fashion of hijab, but some things make me go a bit political. Even though I'm out of the country, I try to keep up with the new back home, and this article from a few days back pretty much made me go insane. Take a look at this.

If you're as ADD as me and can't read a whole article straight through, I'll highlight it for you. Pretty much, in the state of Oregon, public school teachers won't be allowed to wear any religious dress as soon as this bill gets passed, which affects Sikhs, Jews, and of course, us Hijabis.

"Ironically, the proposed legislation is entitled the Oregon Workplace Religious Freedom Act."

Huh? Is it just opposite day and no one decided to tell me?

Casual Summer Style

Salaam everyone! Enjoying the amazing summer? Hope so! This summer, I've been staying with family in Libya on vacation, so as far as clothes goes, it's been pretty chill. Dressing up has been limited to shopping trips to the city and going to see someone. And of course, finding something to wear is hard because of the daily 100+ degree weather, and I'm totally covered. Go figure, right? Well, this is (pretty much) my usual going-out:

1) Mettalic Gauze Swim Cover Up: $24 at Old Navy, 2) White Wide-leg Twill Jeans: $97 at Overstock, 3) Rectangle Hijab: £6 at Al Hijab World, 4) Bias Stitch Hobo Handbag: $50 at Express, 5) Ray-Ban Aviator Sunglasses: $129.99 at Nordstroms, 6) Wedge Flip Flops: $6 at Old Navy

If you can't tell, I'm a fan of Old Navy, their rubber flip flops are my guilty pleasure. I also have a light, long sleeved white shirt under the cover up for a little extra arm coverage and in case my hijab goes up, and that shirt in other colors is a bit see through. And yes, it's meant to be a swimsuit cover up. But I love it! It's long, loose, and keeps me cool in the summer, the colors are super bright and fun, (I bought it in four colors :D,) and I've gotten tons of compliments on it. I like massive hobo or tote bags for when I'm traveling cause I can fit everything for a whole day, even if I'm spending the night somewhere, in one bag. I don't know how much longer mine will last if I keep stuffing it like I do now, but we'll see. It looks better when its fat as opposed to empty anyways, right?

As for the way Ray-Bans, I wouldn't get them. They're way too expensive. Unless you found them for 5 Libyan Dinar, like me! Knockoffs? Probably. Awesome? Definently =]

Top off with the hijab, I would wrap it in the flowy shayla style, and you got yourself a casual yet fabulous look for traveling in. What do you think?

Summer Trend Countdown - #5: Harem Pants

It's been a summer of awesome new trends, and before it's up, I'm gonna count down my five favorites, starting with:

#5 - Harem Pants: MC Hammer, even you can't touch this.

In an age of tight jeans and mini skirts, seeing something legitamatley modest on the runways is refreshing, to say the least. Harem pants are designed to be billowing, loose, but uber stylish, so they're very hijabi friendly and cool for the summer. Miss Sixty has featured this trend in their 2009 Spring/Summer line, here's one:

Delicious, no? But like everything else you see on models, it's a bit too much for us mere mortals to pull off, so here's the toned down, hijab-ifyed version of this fresh off the runway look:

I think I could pull it off. I'm trying to go with the same color scheme as the first outfit, can you tell? I found a slightly less extreme pouf pant, and opted to change the brown band thingy for a jacket (Wishful thinking. Like I have two grand for a jacket...) Loved the belt, but changed it, the bracelet, and the shoes for something a bit more wearable. Top it with a hijab, and voila, modern day Jasmine with a bit more modesty. So, for all you readers who aren't running in fear at the sight of these, here's how you can pull off this trend.

To contrast with the fullness of the pants, go for a tailored fit shirt; not too tight, but not quite a tent either. Blazers work really well with for this look.
For shoes, they say really high heels are required, but I think you can get away with nice flats. Think elegant, strappy, delicate looking shoes. Gladiators are still really hot, here's a great place to try them out.
A nice belt will really pull it all together. Wear it around the hips, to avoid a cinching waist and because it just looks better like that.
Matching trend: bold jewelry. Thick bangles, chuncky necklaces, massive rings, you get the idea. Just keep it to one or two of these statement pieces.
As far as materials go, stick with airy fabrics: soft silks, flowy jerseys, etc. Stay away from the wools and heavier materials that will look thick as opposed to billowing.
Darker colors are easier to pull off. Besides the fact that their more flattering, they're less likley to be see through.

Hey everyone, and welcome to my new muslim fashion blog, where hijab meets haute couture. Being a new hijabi and a long time lover of fashion, blogging about it will (inshallah) help me with this new transition. And of course, I just love to talk about clothes! So before I get to the real blogging, I'll make a little disclaimer about my personal definition of hijab, because of course, everyone interprets things a little differently.

1) Obviously, the hair has to be covered. Entirley, no bangs or baby hairs.

2) The whole body has to be covered, excluding hands, feet, and face.

3) Clothes can't be see-through.

4) Clothes can't be too tight as to show the figure.

5) I'm allright with some natural looking makeup, just not ridiculously much.

If you want to tell me I'm wrong or what I'm doing is haram, go for it, but I'd much rather you didn't.

On a lighter note, hope you like my stuff, and here I go!
